How To Get Your Polytunnel Ready For Spring

With no noticeable increase in the hours of available sunshine yet, it may seem a bit premature to be thinking about getting your polytunnel ready for spring, but think again!

As any experienced amateur polytunnel enthusiast knows, spring always comes around six weeks earlier inside the tunnel than it does in the outside world. In other words, it's nearing the time where you should be starting to get your polytunnel ready for spring - to set the scene for an extended, and hopefully bountiful, growing season.

1. Inspect and Repair

Have a good look round your polytunnel inside and out, checking for any tiny holes that have appeared in the plastic, especially around more vulnerable areas by the framework or doors. Left unrepaired, a tiny hole or tear can soon increase in size, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Use specialist cover repair tape to repair any holes. This is also a good time to apply any anti hot spot repair tape.

2. Clean Inside and Out

Chances are that over the winter your polytunnel exterior has acquired some green algae. As well as being unsightly, any build-up of algae will restrict the amount of light that gets into the tunnel, which is something you don’t want, especially in the early days when young seeds need all the help they can get. Even if you can only see algae on one side of the tunnel, clean the whole exterior using Polytex Pro or Algiclear Pro - both are suitable.

3. Getting Ready

Once everything is clean and dry, this is the ideal time to consider any new equipment you may need for the season ahead. Apart from deciding on what you’re going to grow and harvesting the fruit and vegetables of your labour, this is probably the next most exciting part. If you need extra raised beds for plants, a new potting bench, seed trays, seed tray frames, or a new work station, now is the time to get everything in place.
