Growing cucumbers in a polytunnel

Cucumbers grown in a polytunnel don’t need to be pollinated. Sow seeds in late February and move to your polytunnel in late May. Transplant the seedlings into your raised beds keeping them 60cm apart.

Female cucumbers can be trained up a length of string attached to your crop bar or double ridge (if you have them). These will sometimes produce male flowers remove them out as they appear as they can give your fruit a bitter flavour.

Cucumbers need to be regularly watered and fed with a liquid fertiliser. If the polytunnel is very hot keep well ventilated by opening doors at both ends and shading the plants with a shade netting. For best flavor, harvest cucumbers when young.
